     Hydrocortisone is a type of corticosteriod called Cortisol.  It was first introduced as a treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and was referred to as Compound E.  Hydrocortisone Ointment is scientifically called a topical corticosteroid.   It is not recommended for patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in the preparation.  Some long term studies have not yet been conducted, so the effects of hydrocortisone ointment on fertility or the carcinogenesis potential are not known.

Hydrocortisone Ointment Uses

  • itching of the outer female genitals
  • anal itching
  • diaper rash

     Hydrocortisone is typically used to reduce swelling, itching, and redness.  Most hydrocortisone products can be purchased over the counter and without a prescription.  It is not recommended for use on the face or the underarms.  Dosage and length of treatment usually depends on the type of condition being treated.  You should not bandage, wrap or cover the area and if using on an infant for cases of diaper rash, you should not use tight fitting diapers.

     Hydrocortisone  Ointment is a topical steriod which constitutes a class of typically synthetic steroids used for anti-inflammatory and antipruritic agents.  It's chemical name is Pregn-4-ene-3,20-dione, 11, 17,21-trihydroxy-, (11b)-. Whew, try and say that three times fast.  The mechanism of the anti-inflammatory action is unclear.  Laboratory methods are used to compare and predict potencies of the topical corticosteroids.

     After being absorbed into the skin, topical hydrocortisone is handled through the pharmacokinetic pathways similar to systemically delivered corticosteroids.  It is metabolized primarily in the liver and then is excreted through the kidneys.
